Shakh-i-Zinda
The most mysterious of  Samarkand’s sights – and with some  of   its  most  beautiful  majolica  tilework – is  this street of  tombs east  of  Bibi-Khanym. The name, which
means  the  tomb  of   Living  King, refers to its first and innermost shrine to Kusam  Ibn  Abbas,  who  allegedly brought   Islam   to  the  area  (and  may  or  may  not  be buried here).
Except  for some  pre-Timur tombs at the end, the others belong to  Timur’s and  Ulugbek’s  family and  favorites. The   most   beautiful    is   probably    that   of    Timur’s
niece,  second  on  the  left  after  the entry stairs (which climb over the ancient city  wall  from the  outside).  The site  is  open  8  a.m.  to  7  p.m.  every  day.
